Dave’s interest in ROCK was piqued after having the good fortune of hearing our CEO, Nancy Krenek, speak at a Leadership Georgetown graduation event.
He also works with Chris Smyth who’s daughter rides at ROCK. Chris encouraged Dave to tour ROCK while his daughter was riding. He was introduced to some of the staff and found these folks to be caring and dedicated. And though he’d never had any occasion to be around horses, he felt drawn to the possibility of working with them.
Dave had also never worked with anyone having special needs. What he’s found since becoming a volunteer is that his life has been enriched through his exposure to the happy and joyful nature of these wonderful kids and young adults. As a Side Walker and part of the Pit Crew, Dave says that getting to watch the riders grow and celebrate their victories is a benefit of volunteering he wasn’t expecting. He loves being of service and giving back in any way he can.
Dave has truly lived a life of service to others with 40 years in law enforcement. He retired in 2021 after a career spanning everything from a Field Training Officer, Detective, 22 years as a Federal Agent, State Police Sergeant, to conducting Computer Forensics for child exploitation cases and crimes against children. Dave found this part of his career most rewarding.
When not volunteering at ROCK, Dave also volunteers in the Emergency Room at St. David’s Georgetown Hospital, and is part of Baylor, Scott and White’s Hospice team. He also loves to read, listen to podcasts and take online courses and Master Classes. He also likes to be physically active, some of which he does walking his two-year-old lab.
Dave brings many exceptional qualities to share with us at ROCK and we feel fortunate that he’s joined our volunteer team!
