Doug Watkins is a cherished volunteer who is always willing to step in and help as either a horse handler or a side walker no matter what. He says yes first, then asks questions about the participants. He works with a variety of participants from our most challenging riders to veteran participants.
He is also a volunteer who is handy in our facilities department. He helped cut trees down in the Heroes Trail and drove our tractor to work in the fields. Doug is a friend to anyone he meets and is easy to talk to. He is also a retired Army colonel, and we are excited to honor him as our November featured volunteer.

How did you learn about ROCK?
I visited the ROCK booth at the 2021 Veterans’ Day Parade in San Gabriel Park and met Stephane. She introduced me to the ROV Program.
I Horse Handle, Sidewalk, and I’m in my third 8 week session as an ROV rider. I also help with facility maintenance.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
I most enjoy my interactions with the horses, but I get the most gratification and perspective from trying to help other ROCK clients in any way I can.
What else do you enjoy doing when you’re not at ROCK?
I spend a lot of time gardening and reading history. I also enjoy motorcycle day trips all over Central Texas and the Hill Country, searching for out-of-the-way places for the perfect cheeseburger and chocolate cream pie.
